09 Nov How to transfer contacts from your old iPhone to your new iPhone
The new iPhones are here! It’s great upgrading to the latest iPhone and getting access to the new features and other benefits but the thought of having to manually transfer all your contacts one by one from your old device can be enough to put anyone off. But it doesn’t need to be that way.
This guide will show you three ways to quickly and easily transfer all of your contact information from your old iPhone to your new iPhone so you upgrade stress and hassle free.
How to transfer contacts from your old iPhone to your new iPhone using an iTunes backup
I would recommend this method as it is a much easier and faster process than the others in this guide.
Open iTunes on your computer and connect your old phone via USB cable. You phone should then appear as an icon of the far right of the list of menu icons in the top left corner of the iTunes window.
Select your phone from this list and you should be shown the Summary page – if not look at the menu to the left of the iTunes window and make sure that under the ‘Settings’ heading you have ‘Summary’ selected.
In the Backup section under the heading ‘Automatically back up’ click on ‘This computer’ then ‘Back up now’. This may take a few minutes but will create a back up of all the data on your old phone on your computer.
Turn on your new phone and follow the on-screen prompts to begin the setup process on this device. Make sure at this point that you log in with the same Apple ID that you used on your old phone.
When you reach the stage of the setup process titled ‘Set up iPhone’ select the ‘Restore from iTunes backup’ option. Your phone will then prompt you to connect your new device to your computer so that it can load the back up data from iTunes.
This process may take a little while but when it is finished your new iPhone will have all the contact information from your old iPhone.
How to transfer contacts from your old iPhone to your new iPhone via iCloud
If you do not have easy access to a computer then this method may be a better option for you.
Make sure both the old phone and the new phone are connected to a Wi-Fi network and that you are signed in to your Apple account.
On your old phone, open the Settings app and tap on your Apple ID to open an options menu. In this menu select iCloud and make sure that in the ‘Apps using iCloud’ section Contacts is in the ‘On’ position – if this has been done it will turn green.
Scroll down to ‘iCloud backup’ and make sure that this is also in the ‘On’ position and tap ‘Back up now’. This will back up all of your contact information to iCloud.
Now, on your new phone, again go to the Settings app, tap on your Apple ID, select iCloud, and slide Contacts to the On position the same as you did with the old phone then press the home button to return to the home screen.
Open the Contacts app and swipe your finger down the middle of the screen and hold it there until you see a spinning icon above the contacts list. Lift your finger and wait until your contacts refresh – this may take a few seconds.
Now all the contact information from your old phone should have successfully been transferred from your old iPhone to your new iPhone.
How to transfer contacts from your old iPhone to your new iPhone via contact sharing
If you do not remember your log in details for your Apple ID then your best option may be to transfer your contacts from your old device to your new device by Contact sharing. Unfortunately, this process may take quite a long time and will have to be done one by one so I would definitely recommend using one of the other two options if you can.
Open the Contacts app on your old iPhone and select the contact that you want to transfer.
In the options menu select the ‘Share contact’ open and choose the app that you wish to use to share this information – my advice would be either Messages or Mail.
Enter the name of the person you wish to send the contact information to and click ‘Send’.
The contact information should then be sent as a file which can be opened on your new device to load the contact information as a new entry in the Contacts app.
Repeat this process for all the contacts you want to transfer to your new device.
